ACADEMIC

I have taught at least one new course almost every semester in the past eight years, which has greatly expanded my knowledge base and pedagogical tools.  My formal written research has been somewhat limited in recent years to the work I’ve done preparing these new classes and specific workshops or presentations.  However, I very much look forward to having opportunities in the future to delve into outside research.  My primary interest is examining how creative embellishments of all styles are addressed in the private studio: ornamentation, riffing, scatting, and other forms of improvisation.  Although there is some literature on classroom teaching of general improvisation, there seems to be very little available on the applied lesson front, especially tying classical and contemporary pedagogies together. Past research has been more historical and analytical in nature, focusing on works and styles of World War II émigré composers.
